It’s time to file away the time-worn video programs
which attempt to explain the enigmatic life of the American poet Emily
Dickinson. THIS is the presentation all of us who are English teachers
would like to have been able to make. The quirky title gives a preview
of the content itself – as light as possible when considering the
subject matter, yet obviously intended to share the producer’s enchantment
with Dickinson’s work. Intended, actually, for an audience which
is unfamiliar with poetry at all, the program explores the mysterious
poet’s environment in a context of her emotional, physical, social,
literary, and even sexual peculiarities. One important message viewers
who have tackled Dickinson’s works will receive is that it’s
certainly understandable why some of her poetry isn’t! While "Dickinson
Light" won’t appeal in all situations, libraries serving all
academic levels and public sector patrons will definitely want to consider
this a top purchase for the new year.
